Svaneti is the most celebrated among Georgian mountain regions. Svaneti is a region of mountain-climbers. Most of the local inhabitants possess the skills of walking on mountains and rocks that has been the inherent part of the Svans' life for ages.
Svaneti is not only a region of picturesque and original nature but also a real treasury of ancient Georgian art. In the villages located on mountain slopes, there still remain ancient dwelling houses- Machubi with spacious room and a shed, high defense towers and small medieval churches. All these give the Svanian villages a unique architectural appearance.
To the North, towards the Great Caucasus Range, the Svanetian villages, with their medieval towers, are nested within this stunning environment and offer unique destination for adventure travelers. Ushguli, 1994 declared as UNSECO World's Cultural Heritage, displays breathtaking views of the twin peaks of Mt. Ushba and Mt. Shkhara (5,201m), the highest summit in Georgia and the source of the Enguri River.
